Sailor Tattoos

The natives of the south pacific dawned tattoos as early as the 1700s.  Sailor tattoos were worn by men of the sea as far back and continue to this day.  Many tattoo parlors have sailor tattoosas part of their displays.

One sailor tattoo that was very popular for years and years was an anchor, which in western art symbolizes hope.  Other popular tattoos were a rope, a picture of a ship or the name of a woman that was waiting at a particular port that the sailor had visited.  Yet another was the legendary sea creature the mermaid.

Sailor tattoos continue to be popular today.  Those that choose to have tattoos have let go of the more traditional and are opting for a whole range of designs, though the navy does have some restrictions when it comes to being inked.  Some of the more requested are the lettering, crosses and tribal designs. Years ago, the majority had tattoos on their arms, today many have more than one in areas other than their arms.
